Event Highlights for the 2002-2003 Fiscal year

Introduction

The Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center is the Big Bend's Premiere Entertainment Facility offering a wide variety of quality entertainment, convention and meeting facilities to the Capital City and surrounding areas. Some 557,216 patrons enjoyed not only FSU Basketball, but also musical concerts by Kenny Chesney, Cher, Toby Keith, Matchbox Twenty, The Eagles Farewell I Tour and more. Other events enjoyed by the whole family for Fiscal Year 2002-2003 included: Dragon Tales Live, Bear in the Big Blue House Live, Sesame Street Live, Professional Bull Riders, David Copperfield, Thunder National's Monster Trucks, Lipizzaner Stallions and WWE Unleashed.

The 2002-2003 Tallahassee Broadway Series featured six Broadway shows including Fosse, Swing, and Saturday Night Fever. The sixth annual Kids Night on Broadway in Tallahassee was celebrated with a special pre-show party before the performance of the Broadway musical, Cinderella. The Kids Night Blast included entertainment by members of Tallahassee's Young Actor's Theatre plus cast members of Cinderella. Kids Night on Broadway in Tallahassee gives children the opportunity to see a Broadway show for FREE when accompanied by a paying adult, as well as educating our youth
about Broadway theatre.

The Civic Center hosted 816 events for a total of 932 event days. The following information will give you an idea of how we spent the 2002-2003 fiscal year.

The Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center:

  • hosted 11,000 patrons at religious events
  • hosted 10,500 patrons at comedy events
  • hosted 37,500 patrons at family shows
  • hosted 78,250 guests at graduation ceremonies
  • hosted 1,200 guests at theme parties
  • hosted 3,500 patrons at retail sales events
  • hosted 9,650 at dances

The Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center is known and admired throughout the industry as one of the most dynamic facilities for its size and market. First class facilities include a 40,000 sq. ft. exhibition hall, six connecting meeting rooms and a versatile arena. With an experienced sales staff and Centre Catering, a full-service catering department, the Civic Center is the ideal location to accommodate a variety of conventions, trade shows, legislative receptions, luncheons, dinners or wedding receptions. The six meeting rooms are fully carpeted and equipped with sound systems and adjustable lighting.



Acclaimed for its ability to house major meetings, entertainment and athletic events, the Civic Center is the home court for Florida State University Seminoles men's and women's basketball, not to mention a broad range of cultural events-from concerts to family shows to the Tallahassee Broadway Series.



The Civic Center has a 13,500 seat, 18,000 sq. ft. arena featuring Centre Suites and Club Seats, plus the Spotlight Grille, an arena view restaurant. Open for lunch and before most Arena events, the Spotlight Grille features an indoor dining room, outdoor patio, plus ledge seating for viewing arena events; patrons may enjoy an unforgettable meal and watch an event simultaneously! In addition, the Civic Center has a four-sided center MegaVision video display, a state-of-the-art sound system and four scoreboards in the upper corners of the arena.


Led by a strong starting line-up, the 2002-2003 Florida State University men's basketball team, under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, was considered to be one of the nation's most improved teams. Florida State led the ACC in scoring defense and thrilled fans at the Civic Center when they defeated the fifth ranked Duke Blue Devils on national television. The Florida State Women's team finished 17-13 overall, receiving a bid to the WNIT. Some 157,130 patrons attended sports events at the Civic Center during the 2002-2003 fiscal year.


Not only is the Tallahassee Civic Center a popular venue for a variety of entertainment, it also serves as a primary meeting location for many types of activities. Fiscal year 2002-2003 was a busy year for both the Sales and Catering Departments at the Civic Center. Many civic organizations and businesses, such as the Rotary Club of Tallahassee, Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, Women's Forum and the Tallahassee Society of Association Executives used the Civic Center's meeting rooms and Exhibition Hall for a variety of functions including luncheons and banquets, legislative functions, seminars, wedding receptions, and more.

Fiscal Year 2002-03 was a record year in catering sales for the Civic Center with total revenue of $1,250,962. The Centre Catering staff served 72,184 meals at various functions. With 52,000 square feet of meeting and dining space available, the Sales Staff coordinated 608 events at the Civic Center during the fiscal year 2002-2003 for a total of 713 event days. In addition, the Civic Center offers Off-Site Catering, which provides food services for a variety of functions including wedding receptions and legislative events.

The Civic Center received excellent ratings on food and services while offering a variety of creative menus prepared by its award winning Chef and catering staff for various events.
The Civic Center was also the site of local high school and college graduations with 78,250 guests in attendance. Trade shows during the 2002-2003 Fiscal Year included the MDA Bridal Show, the Florida Women's Show, the North Florida Home Show, and the Florida Sportsman Fishing Show.

FSU MEN'S BASKETBALL

Led by a strong starting line-up, the FSU Men's Basketball team, under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, finished the 2002-03 Season as one of the nation's most improved teams. Florida State led the ACC in scoring defense with a stingy 66.6 points per game allowed. The Seminoles gained one of the biggest victories in school history at home in the Civic Center, when it defeated 5th ranked Duke on national television.

• Florida State University guard Tim Pickett, who earned All-ACC second-team honors during the 2002-03 season, earned four awards and was the big winner at the Seminoles' annual men's basketball banquet hosted by Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. Pickett earned the Bob Sura Outstanding Offensive Player, the Charlie Ward Outstanding Defensive Player and the Dave Cowens Chairman of the Boards Award as well as the team award for the highest free throw percentage.

• Senior Trevor Harvey earned 3 team awards including highest field goal percentage with a .590 from the field.

• Todd Galloway was one of the ACC's top freshman and received 3 FSU team awards including the Otto Petty Assist Award and one for top 3-point field goal percentage.

FSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Florida State Women's Basketball team under Head Coach Sue Semrau, finished the 2002-03 Season with an overall record of 17-13 and received a bid to the WNIT. Tasheika Morris was the team's leading scorer with 15.1 points per game.

• Trinetta Moore received the Defensive Excellence Award and led the team with 62 offensive rebounds.

• Tasheika Morris received the Offensive Excellence Award, was selected All-ACC second team and ranked 6th in the ACC in scoring.

• Team Captain honors went to: Katelyn Vujas and Trinetta Moore.
